Cables for data centres

In short

A data centre needs three kinds of cable: medium voltage cable for the connection (NA2XS(F)2Y, N2XS(F)2Y), power cable for distribution (YMvK Cca, or halogen-free such as YMz1K and N2XH) and data cable for the network (Cat 6A or Cat 7, OS2 and OM4 fibre). Q Cables supplies all three, so power and data cable can go in one enquiry.

In a data centre everything depends on the connection, the distribution and the network. We supply the cable for all three.

From connection to distribution board

The incoming supply is medium voltage: NA2XS(F)2Y in aluminium or N2XS(F)2Y in copper up to the transformer station. Then comes low voltage in large cross-sections, often with parallel cables per phase. YMvK Cca is held in stock in Dordrecht in the common sizes; large cross-sections we supply to order.

Halogen-free where the building requires it

Many data centres specify halogen-free, low-smoke cable, because in a fire it gives off no corrosive smoke that attacks the equipment. YMz1K and N2XH are Cca-s1,d1,a1. On an extra protected escape route the Dutch building code (Bbl) requires B2ca with smoke class s1; we supply that version on request.

Network: copper and fibre

For the cabling to the racks, Cat 6A is the practical choice for 10 Gigabit; Cat 7 S/FTP is held in stock. Fibre connects racks, halls and buildings: OM4 for short links within one hall, OS2 once the distance grows. Our indoor Cat 6A, Cat 7 and fibre cables are halogen-free, in class Dca.

Frequently asked questions
Which cable for distribution inside a data centre?

YMvK Cca for standard distribution; halogen-free types such as YMz1K or N2XH where the specification calls for low-smoke and halogen-free.

Do you also supply network and fibre cable?

Yes: Cat 5e up to Cat 7A and OS2 and OM4 fibre, for indoor and outdoor use. Cat 7 S/FTP is held in stock.

Do you help calculate the cross-section?

Yes. Send load, length, voltage and installation method; we calculate voltage drop and current rating, including for parallel cables.

Send the cable list

Send the load, the lengths, the CPR class from the building specification and the network layout. We calculate the cross-sections, including for parallel cables, and put power and data cable in one quote. Our advice is an aid; the responsible designer or installer checks it and makes the decision.

Send your enquiry

Include cross-section, length and required delivery date, and we can get straight to work.
