NA2XS(F)2Y
Single-core MV XLPE power cable, aluminium conductor, copper wire screen, longitudinally watertight, PE sheath, 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV
NA2XS(F)2Y is the aluminium MV cable with a longitudinally watertight (F) screen and a PE sheath, the workhorse of the distribution network. It is comparable to the Belgian EAXeCWB, but not identical. NA2XS(F)2Y is available in all five voltage classes. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote. The common size 1×95/16 12/20 kV with a PVC sheath is listed under NA2XS(F)Y.
NA2XS(F)2Y is a single-core, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated medium-voltage power cable with an aluminium conductor, for public and industrial distribution and utility networks. The German type NA2XS(F)2Y is comparable to, but not identical with, the Belgian EAXeCWB (different national standard). The compacted stranded aluminium conductor carries an extruded semi-conductive conductor screen, the XLPE insulation and an extruded semi-conductive insulation screen; a concentric copper wire screen (CWS) with a counter-helix copper tape forms the metallic screen and earth/short-circuit path. The (F) design is longitudinally watertight: swellable water-blocking tape in the screen layer stops water from travelling along the cable, and a polyethylene (2Y) outer sheath completes the cable. It is suitable for direct burial, installation in ducts and in air, in the 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV classes.
Also known as: medium voltage cable
Applications
- Distribution network: direct burial, ducts and routes, also in wet ground.
- Large grid and energy projects where aluminium cuts weight and cost.
What to look out for
- If the specification calls for EAXeCWB, NA2XS(F)2Y is comparable but not identical: the cables follow a different national standard. Agree any substitution with the client in advance.
- Choose the voltage class based on the Um of the network (12, 17.5, 24, 36 or 42 kV): insulation thickness runs from 3.4 to 8.8 mm. The outer diameter and the size of joints and terminations change with it.
- Conductor
- Circular stranded, compacted aluminium, class 2 (RM) acc. to IEC 60228.
- Conductor screen
- Extruded semi-conductive compound, bonded to the insulation.
- Insulation
- Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), nominal thickness per voltage class (3.4 mm at 6/10 kV, 4.5 mm at 8.7/15 kV, 5.5 mm at 12/20 kV, 8.0 mm at 18/30 kV, 8.8 mm at 20.8/36 kV).
- Insulation screen
- Extruded semi-conductive compound, bonded to the insulation.
- Metallic screen
- Concentric copper wire screen (CWS) with a counter-helix copper tape; nominal screen cross-section 16 to 50 mm² according to conductor size (designation 1×conductor/screen). Longitudinal water barrier (F): a semi-conductive swellable water-blocking tape under the wire screen and, over it, a second water-blocking tape or a separating tape, depending on the manufacturer (longitudinally watertight).
- Outer sheath
- Polyethylene (2Y / MDPE), black or red; halogen-free.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 6/10 (12) to 20.8/36 (42) kV.
- Test voltage
- 3.5 × Uo AC for 5 min: 21 kV at 6/10, 30.5 kV at 8.7/15, 42 kV at 12/20, 63 kV at 18/30 and 72.8 kV at 20.8/36 kV.
- Standard
- IEC 60502-2 up to and including 18/30 kV; DIN VDE 0276-620 (HD 620 section 10-C) for 6/10, 12/20 and 18/30 kV; 20.8/36 kV constructed following DIN VDE 0276-620; conductors acc. to IEC 60228.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +90 °C (normal operation).
- Max. short-circuit temperature
- +250 °C (max. 5 s).
- Min. bending radius, single-core
- 15 × outer diameter.

NA2XS(F)2Y or N2XS(F)2Y?
NA2XS(F)2Y
- aluminium conductor
- larger cross-section
N2XS(F)2Y
- copper conductor
- smaller cross-section
The difference is the conductor: NA2XS(F)2Y has aluminium, N2XS(F)2Y copper. Screen, swelling tapes, PE sheath and voltage classes (6/10 to 20.8/36 kV) are the same. Aluminium is lighter and more economical, but needs a larger cross-section for the same current. That is why NA2XS(F)2Y is the usual choice in distribution networks; choose copper where a smaller cross-section is needed.

NA2XS(F)2Y
- PE sheath
- 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV
NA2XS(F)Y
- red PVC sheath
- up to 18/30 kV
Conductor, screen and swelling tapes are the same; the difference is the sheath. NA2XS(F)2Y has a PE sheath and comes from 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV. NA2XS(F)Y has a red PVC sheath and goes up to 18/30 kV. For new underground routes choose NA2XS(F)2Y, for extending a route with PVC-sheathed cable NA2XS(F)Y.
