Application

Cat 7 S/FTP is the fully screened cable to 600 MHz: 10G with ample margin and future-proof, interference-free cabling. In stock in Dordrecht: ordered before 12:00, usually on site within 1–2 working days.

Cat 7 S/FTP is a fully screened four-pair Category 7 data installation cable for structured building cabling, supplied on a reel for horizontal permanent links. Each of the four pairs is built from two solid bare-copper AWG23 conductors insulated with polyethylene (PE / foam-skin PE) and wrapped in its own aluminium/polyester foil; the four foiled pairs are enclosed by an overall braid of tinned copper wires under a low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) outer sheath (S = screened overall braid, FTP = foiled twisted pairs). Compared with Category 6A the pair and overall screening are specified to a higher bandwidth: Cat 7 meets Class F to 600 MHz with substantially better pair-to-pair and alien-crosstalk headroom, and most cables of this construction are physically tested well beyond that (many to 1,000 MHz), which supports higher-grade components. It carries 10GBASE-T to 100 m with large margin, all lower Ethernet grades and Power over Ethernet to IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4). Class F links are normally terminated on GG45 or TERA connectors (backward-compatible with RJ45 for Class EA and below). The LSZH sheath (CPR Dca or B2ca) suits indoor routing in public buildings (the required class depends on the building use and the type of space, Bbl table 4.42); a PVC-sheathed Eca variant is offered for less demanding environments.

Applications

  • Future-proof cabling in office and data centre.
  • Networks with high bandwidth and EMC demands.

What to look out for

  • Cat 7 often uses non-RJ45 connectors (GG45/TERA) for Class F.
  • For the highest bandwidth choose Cat 7A.

Which one do I choose?

Cat 7 or Cat 6A?

Cat 7 S/FTP

  • Class F, 600 MHz
  • 10GBASE-T over 100 m

Cat 6A

  • Class EA, 500 MHz
  • 10GBASE-T over 100 m

Cat 7 (Class F) is specified up to 600 MHz, Cat 6A (Class EA) up to 500 MHz, and both carry 10GBASE-T over 100 m. The added value of Cat 7 only comes with GG45 or TERA connectors; with ordinary RJ45 the link stays Class EA. The American TIA never recognised Cat 7. If the specification does not ask for Class F, Cat 6A is sufficient.

Cat 7 or Cat 7A?

Cat 7 S/FTP

  • Class F, 600 MHz
  • needs GG45 or TERA

Cat 7A

  • Class FA, 1,000 MHz
  • needs GG45 or TERA

Both are S/FTP with a foil around each pair, a tinned copper braid and AWG 23 conductors. Cat 7 goes up to 600 MHz (Class F), Cat 7A up to 1,000 MHz (Class FA). Both need GG45 or TERA connectors to achieve that class. Choose Cat 7A if the specification calls for Class FA; otherwise Cat 7 is sufficient.
