VOB

Belgian NBN single-core PVC building wire (H07V-U/-R), Cu/PVC, no sheath

Application

VOB is the Belgian building wire (H07V-U/-R) for 450/750 V: a single PVC-insulated copper core without a sheath, for conduit, trunking and switchboards. The most common wire in Belgian installations. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

VOB is the Belgian single-core installation wire (building wire) to NBN C 32-123 / HD 21.3 (H07V-U solid, H07V-R stranded) for 450/750 V fixed wiring. It consists of a single copper conductor insulated with PVC; there is no outer sheath, so VOB is drawn into conduits, trunking and cable ducts, or wired in enclosures and distribution boards. The PVC insulation is colour-coded to HD 308 S2 (including green/yellow for protective conductors). VOB is the most common wire in Belgian domestic and commercial installations; where a sheathed cable is required, XVB or XGB is used instead.

Applications

  • Fixed wiring in conduit, trunking and duct in Belgian installations.
  • Wiring of switchboards and distribution boards.
  • Residential and commercial builds to Belgian specification.

What to look out for

  • Solid (H07V-U) in the small sizes, stranded (H07V-R) from 6 mm² upward; the finely stranded version is called VOBs and needs ferrules.
  • VOB is the Belgian H07V-U/H07V-R: in a Dutch specification look for that designation.
  • Need a sheathed cable? Choose XVB (PVC) or XGB (halogen-free).
Construction
Conductor
Plain annealed copper: solid class 1 (H07V-U) in the small sizes, stranded class 2 (H07V-R) from 6 mm² upward, acc. to IEC 60228. A flexible VOBs variant with a class 5 conductor (H07V-K) is available.
Insulation
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), type TI1.
Core identification
Single colour per HD 308 S2: blue, brown, black, grey, red, orange or green/yellow.
Sheath
None (single-core insulated wire).
Electrical & thermal properties
Rated voltage Uo/U
450/750 V.
Test voltage
2.5 kV AC.
Standard
NBN C 32-123 / HD 21.3 (EN 50525-2-31); conductor acc. to IEC 60228.
Reaction to fire (CPR)
Class Eca acc. to EN 50575 (halogen-free VOB-variant Cca on request).
Flame-retardant
Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2.
Max. conductor temperature
+70 °C (short circuit +160 °C, max. 5 s).
Permitted ambient temperature, fixed
−15 °C to +70 °C.
Min. bending radius, fixed
4 × outer diameter.
Which one do I choose?

VOB or XVB?

VOB

  • single core, no sheath
  • 450/750 V
  • in conduit, trunking or enclosure

XVB

  • sheathed cable
  • 0.6/1 kV
  • clipped, on trays, in concrete

VOB is a single insulated core without a sheath, for 450/750 V. That is why VOB always goes in conduit, trunking or an enclosure. XVB is a sheathed 0.6/1 kV cable that may be clipped, run on cable trays or embedded in concrete. If you pull wires into conduit, choose VOB; if the run has no conduit, choose XVB.

VOB or VOBs?

VOB

  • equivalent to H07V-U and H07V-R
  • solid or stranded

VOBs

  • equivalent to H07V-K
  • fine-stranded conductor

VOB is the Belgian name for H07V-U and H07V-R: solid in the small sizes and stranded in the larger ones. VOBs is the flexible version with a fine-stranded conductor, equivalent to H07V-K. VOBs is easier to wire in enclosures and distribution boards, but needs ferrules. For ordinary conduit installation, VOB is sufficient.
