NYY
PVC power / underground cable, 0.6/1 kV
NYY is the German PVC power and underground cable for 0.6/1 kV: copper, PVC insulation and a black PVC sheath, suitable for direct burial. The counterpart of YMvK and VO-YMvKas for projects to German specification. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
NYY (also (N)YY) is a PVC-insulated power and underground cable for a rated voltage of 0.6/1 kV to DIN VDE 0276-603 (HD 603 S1), with plain copper conductors (solid class 1 / stranded class 2, circular or sector-shaped), PVC core insulation, an inner PVC covering (bedding) and a black PVC outer sheath. It is used for fixed power distribution in buildings, cable ducts and outdoors, and may be laid directly in the ground. The -J version carries a green/yellow protective conductor; the -O version has the same construction and dimensions without it. It is available as single-core and 2- to 5-core cables from 1.5 to 630 mm².
Also known as: underground cable · power cable
Applications
- Fixed power distribution in buildings, cable ducts and outdoors.
- Underground installation, direct or in a duct.
- Projects to German specification (DIN VDE 0276-603).
What to look out for
- Unarmoured: underground we advise a sand bed with cover tiles or a duct; where damage threatens, choose an armoured type such as VG-YMvKas.
- J = with green/yellow earth (e.g. 3G1.5), O = without (3×1.5): for circuits with an earth conductor always the J version.
- Aluminium version: NAYY, more economical in large cross-sections.
- CPR class Eca. Where the cable is exposed to indoor air in a building, the Bbl requires at least Dca. Choose a type with at least Dca there, such as YMvK Cca or VG-YMvKas.
- Conductor
- Plain (bare) copper, solid class 1 or stranded class 2 acc. to IEC 60228 / DIN VDE 0295; circular (RE/RM) or sector-shaped (SM) in the larger multicore sizes.
- Insulation
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), compound type DIV4 acc. to HD 603 S1.
- Bedding
- Inner PVC covering (bedding) over the laid-up cores.
- Sheath
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), compound type DMV5 acc. to HD 603 S1; black.
- Core identification
- Acc. to HD 308 S2 / VDE 0293-308; -J with green/yellow protective conductor, -O without.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 0.6/1 kV (600/1000 V).
- Test voltage
- 4 kV AC.
- Standard
- DIN VDE 0276-603 (HD 603 S1); IEC 60502-1; conductors acc. to IEC 60228.
- Flame-retardant
- Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2 / DIN EN 60332-1-2.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +70 °C in normal operation.
- Max. short-circuit temperature
- +160 °C (≤ 300 mm²), +140 °C (> 300 mm²), up to 5 s.
- Min. bending radius, fixed
- 12 × outer diameter (multicore); 15 × for single-core.
NYY or NAYY?
NYY
- copper conductors
- smaller cross-section
NAYY
- aluminium conductors
- larger cross-section
NYY has copper conductors, NAYY aluminium; otherwise the build is the same, with PVC insulation and a black PVC sheath to DIN VDE 0276-603. Aluminium is lighter and more economical, but needs a larger cross-section for the same current and terminals approved for aluminium. For smaller circuits NYY is the simple choice; in large cross-sections NAYY pays off.

NYY
- green/yellow core among phase cores
- serves as protective conductor
NYCWY
- concentric copper wires around cores
- serves as PEN and screen
NYY-J has a green/yellow core among the phase cores. NYCWY has no green/yellow core but a concentric conductor of copper wires around the cores; it serves as the PEN in a TN-C network and also forms a screen. Choose NYCWY for mains supply and distribution in a TN-C network. For distribution with a green/yellow protective conductor in the cable, choose NYY-J.
