Application

VO-YMvKas Dca is the Dutch underground cable with a galvanised steel wire braid and a tinned copper earth conductor (GSWB): XLPE insulation for 90 °C, flame-retardant PVC sheath, KEMA-KEUR and reaction-to-fire class Dca. In stock in Dordrecht up to 4×6 mm².

VO-YMvKas is the Dutch braid-armoured installation and control cable for 0.6/1 kV fixed power, control and signalling circuits that need mechanical protection and an earth path. The plain copper conductors are insulated with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), laid up and covered with a PVC bedding; a braid of galvanised steel wires over a tinned-copper earth strand provides armouring and the earth path, and a PVC outer sheath completes the cable. VO-YMvKas is common in building services, machine rooms and panels where a robust, earthed installation cable is required. The XLPE insulation gives a +90 °C conductor rating. The braided type is made in the smaller cross-sections; for larger power sizes the steel-wire-armoured VG-YMvKas is used instead.

Also known as: underground cable

Applications

  • Supply to outbuildings, EV chargers and outdoor installations, directly in the ground without conduit.
  • Industrial sites and farms: cable in the ground that has to withstand spade and stone.
  • Building services, machine rooms and panels where an earthed, armoured installation cable is required.

What to look out for

  • Braid and earth conductor together form the earth path: connect the earth conductor; the braid alone is not enough.
  • Solid class 1 copper: fits terminals directly, no ferrules. Larger cross-sections and class 2: VG-YMvKas.
  • The braid protects against spade and stone, not against an excavator: about 60 cm of cover and warning tape are still needed; we advise a sand bed. Larger power sizes: VG-YMvKas.
  • Single-core YMvKas has a magnetic steel armour, which heats up with alternating current. Single-core is therefore for DC; for AC, choose a multicore cable.
  • From stock, any length cut to size and no minimum. Ordered before 12:00, usually on site within 1–2 working days.

Current ratings to NEN 1010, for copper at a conductor temperature of 90 °C and one multi-core cable. Method C: clipped direct on a wall. Method E: in free air or on a perforated cable tray. Method D1: in a duct in the ground. Method D2: direct in the ground. The values apply to one circuit, at 30 °C in air or at 20 °C and a soil thermal resistivity of 2.5 K·m/W in the ground. We recalculate them for your situation.

Which one do I choose?

VO-YMvKas or NYY?

VO-YMvKas Dca

  • galvanised steel wire braid
  • XLPE insulation, 90 °C
  • earth via earth strand

NYY

  • unarmoured
  • PVC insulation, 70 °C
  • green/yellow core in J version

VO-YMvKas has a galvanised steel wire braid and XLPE insulation rated for 90 °C. VO-YMvKas has no green/yellow core: the earth runs through the tinned copper earth strand under the braid. NYY is unarmoured, has PVC insulation rated for 70 °C and, in the J version, a green/yellow core; underground we advise a sand bed with cover tiles or a duct for NYY. Choose NYY mainly for a German specification and VO-YMvKas for a Dutch one.

VO-YMvKas or EXAVB?

VO-YMvKas Dca

  • galvanised steel wire braid
  • earth strand, no green/yellow core

EXAVB

  • steel wire or double steel tape
  • green/yellow core in G version

EXAVB is armoured: steel wire up to and including 10 mm² and a double steel tape from 16 mm². VO-YMvKas has a galvanised steel wire braid and a tinned copper earth strand, with no green/yellow core. On EXAVB the copper protective circuit is not an earth conductor: if you want an earth in the cable, choose the version with a green/yellow core (G). In Belgium choose EXAVB, in the Netherlands VO-YMvKas.
