Application

VG-YMvKas Dca ALU is the aluminium version of the armoured underground cable: aluminium conductors, XLPE insulation, galvanised steel wire armour with earth continuity conductor (GSWA+ECC) and a flame-retardant PVC sheath in reaction-to-fire class Dca, Cca on request. For long routes and large cross-sections, where the weight and copper price of the copper version are major factors.

Armoured power cable with aluminium conductors for 0.6/1 kV, for low-voltage installations to NEN 1010. Suitable for direct burial, also in wet soil but not directly in water, and for installation above ground, for example as a supply cable for main and sub-distribution boards where mechanical protection is needed. The aluminium conductors keep the cable light. Available with three and four cores from 35 to 300 mm².

Also known as: aluminium underground cable

Applications

  • Underground distribution over longer distances on business parks and in infrastructure.
  • Low-voltage connections of solar parks, charging plazas and transformer stations.
  • Underground supply cables to buildings. If the specification calls for Cca, we supply that version on request.

What to look out for

  • Aluminium: terminate with bimetallic lugs or terminals approved for aluminium, clean and grease the contact face. Aluminium directly on a copper busbar corrodes.
  • The same current needs one to two steps more cross-section than copper: aluminium 4×150 mm² corresponds to copper 4×95 mm².
  • For the same current, a larger outer diameter and bending radius than the copper VG-YMvKas: check entries, glands and bends in the route accordingly.
  • Connect armour and earth continuity conductor together as the earth path, at both ends.

Current ratings to NEN 1010, for aluminium at a conductor temperature of 90 °C and one multi-core cable. Method C: clipped direct on a wall. Method E: in free air or on a perforated cable tray. Method D1: in a duct in the ground. Method D2: direct in the ground. The values apply to one circuit, at 30 °C in air or at 20 °C and a soil thermal resistivity of 2.5 K·m/W in the ground. We recalculate them for your situation.

Which one do I choose?

VG-YMvKas Dca ALU or AL/AL?

VG-YMvKas Dca ALU

  • galvanised steel wire
  • copper wire earth conductor (ECC)

VG-YMvKas AL/AL

  • round aluminium wires
  • earth via the armour

Both have aluminium conductors, XLPE insulation and no green/yellow core. The difference is the armour, and with it the earth. VG-YMvKas Dca ALU has galvanised steel wire with an earth continuity conductor of copper wires (ECC); on VG-YMvKas AL/AL the armour of round aluminium wires carries the earth itself. If you want to connect the earth to copper, choose the Dca ALU; with AL/AL the glands must also be suitable for aluminium.

VG-YMvKas Dca ALU or the copper VG-YMvKas?

VG-YMvKas Dca ALU

  • aluminium conductors
  • terminals approved for aluminium

VG-YMvKas Dca

  • copper conductors
  • connects directly to copper terminals

Armour with earth continuity conductor (GSWA+ECC), XLPE insulation, PVC sheath and CPR class Dca-s2,d2,a3 are the same; the main difference is the conductor. Aluminium is lighter and more economical, but needs a larger cross-section for the same current and bimetallic lugs or terminals approved for aluminium. Aluminium pays off mainly on long routes and in large cross-sections; copper connects directly to copper terminals.
