Application

RE-2X(St)Y is the EN 50288-7 instrumentation cable with XLPE core insulation and a PVC sheath. The common choice for measuring and control signals where no halogen-free requirement applies. Available with individual screening (PiMF/TiMF) and with steel wire armour (SWA) or steel wire braid (SWB); see the versions. The armoured 4×2×1.3 PiMF (RE-2X(St)YSWBY) has its own product page and is in stock in Dordrecht; the other versions on request.

RE-2X(St)Y is an instrumentation and process-control cable to EN 50288-7 (VDE 0819-7) for measuring, control, signal and alarm circuits. The copper conductors are insulated with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and stranded into pairs or triads, which are assembled and enclosed by a collective (overall) screen of aluminium/polyester foil in contact with a tinned copper drain wire. A polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer sheath protects the cable in fixed installation indoors and outdoors, in cable trays, ducts and trunking. The overall screen protects the assembled signal pairs against electromagnetic interference; the cable is not intended for power distribution.

Also known as: instrumentation cable

Applications

  • Measuring, control, signal and alarm circuits in the process industry.
  • Fixed installation indoors and outdoors, on trays, in ducts and trunking.
  • Applications without a halogen-free requirement where XLPE insulation is wanted.

What to look out for

  • Collective screen as standard; for separation between signals choose PiMF or TiMF.
  • Armour: SWA (steel wire) for mechanical protection, SWB (steel wire braid) as a lighter alternative.
  • Where low-smoke/halogen-free is needed, choose RE-2X(St)H (LSZH).
  • CPR class Dca-s3,d2,a3. Where the cable is exposed to indoor air in a building, the Bbl requires smoke class s2 or better, and RE-2X(St)Y does not meet that. Embedded in concrete the requirement does not apply.

Which one do I choose?

RE-2X(St)Y or RE-2Y(St)Y?

RE-2X(St)Y

  • XLPE insulation
  • up to 90 °C

RE-2Y(St)Y

  • PE insulation
  • up to 70 °C

The difference is the core insulation. RE-2X(St)Y has XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) and allows a conductor temperature of up to 90 °C, RE-2Y(St)Y has PE and goes up to 70 °C. Screen, PVC sheath and the EN 50288-7 standard are the same. Choose RE-2X(St)Y where the cable may run warm, such as along hot process lines; otherwise RE-2Y(St)Y is enough.

RE-2X(St)Y or JE-Y(St)Y?

RE-2X(St)Y

  • EN 50288-7
  • XLPE insulation
  • 300 V
  • 0.5 to 1.5 mm²

JE-Y(St)Y

  • DIN VDE 0815
  • PVC insulation
  • 225 V
  • solid 0.8 mm cores

Both are screened signal cables with pairs, but for a different field. RE-2X(St)Y is the instrumentation cable to EN 50288-7: XLPE insulation, 300 V and cross-sections from 0.5 to 1.5 mm². JE-Y(St)Y follows DIN VDE 0815 for industrial electronics: PVC insulation, solid 0.8 mm cores and 225 V. Choose RE-2X(St)Y for measuring loops in the process industry, and JE-Y(St)Y for measuring and control signals in electronics and building automation.
