NYM-J
PVC sheathed installation cable, 300/500 V
NYM-J is the German sheathed installation cable for 300/500 V: the standard for fixed indoor wiring in and on plaster, in masonry and in dry to wet rooms. Grey PVC sheath, green/yellow earth. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
NYM-J is a sheathed installation cable for a rated voltage of 300/500 V to DIN VDE 0250-204, with plain copper conductors (solid class 1 up to 10 mm², stranded class 2 from 16 mm²), PVC core insulation, a non-hygroscopic filler and a grey PVC outer sheath. It is used for fixed indoor wiring in and on plaster, in masonry and in dry, moist and wet rooms, but not for direct burial in the ground or outdoor exposure to permanent UV. The -J version carries a green/yellow protective conductor; the -O version has the same construction and dimensions without the protective conductor. It is available in sizes from 1.5 to 35 mm² in the common 1-, 3-, 4-, 5- and multi-core configurations.
Also known as: sheathed installation cable
Applications
- Fixed indoor wiring in and on plaster, in masonry and in concrete, but not embedded directly in vibrated or tamped concrete.
- Circuits and distribution boards in residential and commercial builds (German specification).
- Dry, damp and wet indoor locations.
What to look out for
- Not for direct burial or unprotected outdoor use; choose NYY instead.
- J = with green/yellow earth (e.g. 3G1.5), O = without (3×1.5): for circuits with an earth conductor always the J version.
- For low-smoke/halogen-free, NHXMH is the counterpart.
- CPR class Eca. Where the cable is exposed to indoor air in a building, the Bbl requires at least Dca; there, choose a type with a higher class, such as NHXMH (Cca).
- Conductor
- Plain (bare) copper, solid class 1 (1.5-10 mm²) or stranded class 2 (16-35 mm²) acc. to IEC 60228 / DIN VDE 0295.
- Insulation
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), compound type TI1 acc. to DIN EN 50363-3.
- Filler
- Non-hygroscopic filling compound / core wrapping over the laid-up cores.
- Sheath
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), compound type TM1 acc. to DIN EN 50363-4-1; grey (RAL 7035).
- Core identification
- Acc. to HD 308 S2; -J with green/yellow protective conductor, -O without protective conductor.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 300/500 V.
- Test voltage
- 2 kV.
- Standard
- DIN VDE 0250-204; conductors acc. to IEC 60228 / DIN VDE 0295.
- Flame-retardant
- Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2 / DIN EN 60332-1-2.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +70 °C (fixed installation).
- Permitted outer cable temperature, fixed
- −40 °C to +70 °C; min. laying temperature −5 °C.
- Min. bending radius, fixed
- 4 × outer diameter.
NYM-J or NYY?
NYM-J
- 300/500 V
- indoor use
NYY
- 0.6/1 kV
- outdoors and direct burial
NYM-J is a 300/500 V installation cable for indoor use: in and on plaster, in masonry and in concrete, but not embedded directly in vibrated or tamped concrete. NYY is a 0.6/1 kV power cable with a black PVC sheath. NYY may also be laid outdoors and directly in the ground. If the cable goes into the ground or outdoors unprotected, choose NYY; indoors, NYM-J is sufficient.

NYM-J
- PVC insulation and sheath
NHXMH
- halogen-free insulation and sheath
Both are sheathed installation cables for 300/500 V and 70 °C, for fixed indoor wiring. NYM-J has PVC insulation and a PVC sheath; NHXMH has halogen-free insulation and sheath that give little smoke and no corrosive gases in a fire. Choose NHXMH where the specification calls for halogen-free, for example in public buildings. Mind the CPR class too: NYM-J is Eca, NHXMH is Cca. Where the cable is exposed to indoor air in a building, the Bbl requires at least Dca, and NYM-J does not meet that.
