Cat 6 U/UTP
Category 6 U/UTP LAN installation cable, Class E
Cat 6 U/UTP is the office standard to 250 MHz: four unscreened pairs with a cross separator, 100 ohm, for Gigabit and 10G over shorter runs. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
Cat 6 U/UTP is an unscreened four-pair horizontal installation cable for structured building cabling and high-speed LAN/network wiring, supporting Class E links to ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173 up to 250 MHz. Each conductor is a solid bare copper wire of AWG23 (nominal 0.57 mm) with solid polyethylene (PE) insulation; two cores are twisted into a pair and the four pairs (4 × 2 × AWG23) are laid up around a non-metallic central cross-filler (spline) that keeps the pairs geometrically separated and improves NEXT and return-loss performance. A PVC outer sheath completes the unscreened U/UTP construction. Without a metallic screen the cable stays relatively thin and easy to terminate, while delivering 1000BASE-T and 10GBASE-T (up to 55 m) as well as PoE/PoE+/PoE++ powering. It is supplied on reels or in pull-boxes for fixed indoor installation in conduit, trunking, floor ducts and cavities. The standard sheath is PVC with a CPR reaction-to-fire class of Eca (Dca on request); a low-smoke halogen-free (LSZH) version with class Dca or B2ca is available; the required class depends on the building use and the type of space (Bbl, table 4.42).

Applications
- Structured cabling in office and commercial buildings.
- 10GBASE-T over shorter channel lengths.
What to look out for
- Unscreened: for 10G over the full 100 m, choose Cat 6A.
- CPR class Eca in PVC. Where the cable is exposed to indoor air in a building, the Bbl requires at least Dca. On request we supply Cat 6 U/UTP in Dca, and halogen-free also in B2ca.

Cat 6 or Cat 6A?
Cat 6 U/UTP
- Class E, 250 MHz
- 10GBASE-T up to 55 m
Cat 6A
- Class EA, 500 MHz
- 10 Gigabit over 100 m
Cat 6 (Class E) goes up to 250 MHz and carries 10GBASE-T up to 55 m, provided neighbouring cables do not cause too much crosstalk. Cat 6A (Class EA) goes up to 500 MHz and achieves 10 Gigabit over the full 100 m. Our Cat 6A has a foil around each pair and needs screened connectors. Choose Cat 6 for Gigabit and short 10G links, and Cat 6A if 10 Gigabit must work over the full link length.

Cat 6 U/UTP
- PVC sheath
- CPR class Eca
- for indoor use
outdoor Cat 6
- UV-resistant PE sheath
- class Fca
- outdoors, ducts and ground
The same Cat 6 build, but a different sheath. Cat 6 U/UTP has a PVC sheath with CPR class Eca and is for indoor use. Outdoor Cat 6 has a UV-resistant PE sheath with gel filling or water-blocking tape, for outdoors, in ducts and in the ground, but it has class Fca and is not intended for permanent installation indoors. Install U/UTP indoors and the outdoor cable outside, with the transition at the building entry.
