Application

Cat 6A U/FTP is the 10 Gigabit workhorse: a foil around every pair, an LSZH sheath, 500 MHz and 10G over the full 100 metres. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

Cat 6A U/FTP is a four-pair Category 6A data installation cable for structured building cabling, supplied on a reel for horizontal permanent links. Each of the four pairs consists of two solid bare-copper AWG23 conductors insulated with polyethylene (PE) and is wrapped in its own aluminium/polyester foil; the four foiled pairs are stranded together directly under a low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) outer sheath, with no additional overall screen (U = unscreened overall, FTP = foiled twisted pairs). The individual pair foils suppress pair-to-pair crosstalk and, importantly at Category 6A, the alien crosstalk between neighbouring cables that limits 10GBASE-T over UTP. This foiled-pair design delivers Class EA performance to 500 MHz with a markedly smaller diameter and tighter bundle fill than an unscreened U/UTP cable, while terminating on standard RJ45 (screened) modules. It supports 10GBASE-T to 100 m, all lower Ethernet grades and Power over Ethernet up to IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4). The LSZH sheath (CPR Dca or B2ca) suits indoor routing in public buildings (the required class depends on the building use and the type of space, Bbl table 4.42); a PVC-sheathed Eca variant is offered for less demanding environments. For outdoor, direct-burial or heavy-EMI routes a fully screened S/FTP construction is preferred.

Cat 6A10 GigabitU/FTP

Also known as: network cable · 10 gigabit cable

Applications

  • 10GBASE-T over 100 metres in office and data centre.
  • Dense bundles where crosstalk must be controlled.

What to look out for

  • Foil per pair: when terminating, keep the foils on to the last centimetre and terminate the cable on a screened jack; a UTP jack makes the screening worthless.
  • For an added overall screen choose F/FTP or S/FTP.

Which one do I choose?

Cat 6A U/FTP or Cat 6 U/UTP?

Cat 6A U/FTP

  • foil around each pair
  • up to 500 MHz
  • 10GBASE-T over 100 m

Cat 6 U/UTP

  • unscreened
  • up to 250 MHz
  • 10 Gigabit up to 55 m

Cat 6A U/FTP has a foil around each pair and goes up to 500 MHz (Class EA). That lets the cable carry 10GBASE-T over the full 100 m, even in dense bundles. Cat 6 U/UTP is unscreened, goes up to 250 MHz and reaches 10 Gigabit only up to 55 m. For 10 Gigabit over the full link length, choose Cat 6A U/FTP; for Gigabit, Cat 6 is sufficient.

Cat 6A U/FTP or Cat 6A S/FTP?

Cat 6A U/FTP

  • no braid
  • lighter

Cat 6A S/FTP

  • tinned copper braid
  • more robust

Both have a foil around each pair and achieve Class EA up to 500 MHz. S/FTP adds a tinned copper braid around the whole core, which makes the cable more robust and is better at keeping out low-frequency interference in particular. U/FTP lacks that braid and is therefore lighter. U/FTP is sufficient in offices and data centres, and S/FTP is the choice for industry and routes with a lot of interference.
