Cat 6 outdoor U/UTP
Category 6 outdoor / direct-burial U/UTP LAN cable, Class E
Cat 6 outdoor U/UTP is the outdoor and burial version of Cat 6: a UV- and weather-resistant PE sheath for building-to-building links and camera installations. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
Cat 6 outdoor U/UTP is an unscreened four-pair LAN cable built for outdoor, duct and direct-burial routing between buildings and to external equipment, supporting Class E links to ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173 up to 250 MHz. Each conductor is a solid bare copper wire of AWG 23 (nominal 0.57 mm) with solid polyethylene (PE/HDPE) insulation; two cores are twisted into a pair and the four pairs (4×2×AWG 23) are laid up around a central cross-filler under a black, UV-stabilised polyethylene (PE) outer sheath. Unlike an indoor PVC cable, the PE sheath resists sunlight (UV), moisture, cold and mechanical stress, and the cable is normally gel-filled (petroleum-jelly flooding compound) or fitted with a water-blocking tape/yarn so that moisture cannot travel along the core, which is essential for buried and ducted runs. Being U/UTP it carries no metallic screen. It supports 1000BASE-T and 10GBASE-T (up to 55 m) plus PoE/PoE+/PoE++ and is supplied on reels or in pull-boxes. For long outdoor spans and lightning/earth-potential exposure a screened (F/UTP) outdoor variant or an armoured / figure-8 messenger variant is available; a double-sheath (PE over an inner PVC) heavy-duty version is also offered. Note: an all-outdoor PE cable is not fire-rated for permanent indoor runs, so transition to an indoor CPR-rated cable at the building entry (or observe the permitted indoor entry length).
Also known as: outdoor network cable
Applications
- Network links between buildings and across a site.
- Outdoor camera and access installations.
What to look out for
- For direct burial: choose the gel-filled/armoured version and bury deep enough.
- At building entry, transition to a halogen-free indoor cable.
- Conductor
- Solid bare copper, AWG 23 (nominal 0.57 mm).
- Insulation
- Polyethylene (PE).
- Cores
- 4 twisted pairs, 100 Ω, unscreened (U/UTP).
- Sheath
- UV- and weather-resistant PE, black; gel-filled or with water-blocking tape; double sheath (PE over PVC) on request.
- Category / class
- Cat 6 / Class E.
- Frequency range
- Up to 250 MHz.
- Characteristic impedance
- 100 Ω.
- Screen
- None (U/UTP).
- Conductor
- 4×2×AWG 23.
Outdoor Cat 6 or fibre?
Cat 6 outdoor U/UTP
- copper, 100 m at most
fibre
- OS2, up to kilometres
The difference is the distance. A copper network channel is at most 100 m long under ISO/IEC 11801, whereas OS2 fibre runs to kilometres. Choose outdoor Cat 6 for short runs across a site, for example to an outdoor camera or access post, where power over the same cable (PoE) is handy. If the link is longer than 100 m, it becomes fibre.
Outdoor Cat 6 or indoor Cat 6 U/UTP?
Cat 6 outdoor U/UTP
- not for permanent indoor installation
- class Fca
Cat 6 U/UTP
- indoor cable
- class Eca
Electrically it is the same Cat 6, but the sheath decides where it goes. Outdoor Cat 6 has a UV-resistant PE sheath and gel filling or water-blocking tape, so that water cannot travel along the core. The outdoor cable has class Fca and is not intended for permanent installation indoors. At the building entry, you change to an indoor cable with the CPR class the Bbl requires: at least Dca where the cable is exposed to indoor air. Cat 6 U/UTP is Eca as standard; on request we supply Cat 6 U/UTP in Dca, and halogen-free also in B2ca.
