Application

BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1 is the British instrumentation cable with PE insulation, a collective screen and a PVC sheath, unarmoured. The counterpart of EN 50288-7 RE-2Y(St)Y. For measuring and control signals in the process industry. Also available with individually screened pairs (PiMF) and with an LSZH sheath; see the datasheets per version.

BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1 with an overall screen (the standard is withdrawn, but BS 5308 is still the usual order designation; near-equivalent to EN 50288-7) is a polyethylene-insulated, unarmoured instrumentation and process-control cable for measuring, control, signal and alarm circuits. The plain copper conductors are insulated with polyethylene (PE) and twisted into pairs (or triads), which are laid up and enclosed by a single overall (collective) screen of aluminium/polyester foil in contact with a tinned copper drain wire; there are no individual pair screens. A polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer sheath protects the cable for fixed installation indoors and outdoors, in cable trays, ducts and trunking. In BS 5308 / PAS 5308 the Part denotes the core insulation (Part 1 = polyethylene, Part 2 = PVC) and the Type denotes the armour (Type 1 = unarmoured, Type 2 = galvanised steel-wire-armoured); the screening, either an overall (collective) screen only or individual pair screens plus an overall screen, is specified separately. It is the British near-equivalent of EN 50288-7 RE-2Y(St)Y. The cable is not intended for power distribution.

BS 5308PEUnarmoured

Also known as: instrumentation cable

Applications

  • Measuring, control, signal and alarm circuits in the process industry (British specification).
  • Projects specified to BS 5308.
  • Fixed installation indoors and outdoors, on cable trays, in ducts and trunking.

What to look out for

  • Type 1 = unarmoured. For direct burial or heavy-duty routes choose Type 2 (SWA).
  • Collective screen as standard; where crosstalk between pairs is critical, ask for the PiMF version.
  • PE insulation: max. 70 °C conductor temperature, bending radius 6× the outer diameter, 7.5× with individually screened pairs (PiMF). Blue sheath for intrinsically safe circuits.
  • CPR class Eca. Where the cable is installed permanently in a building and exposed to indoor air, the Bbl requires at least Dca; choose the LSZH version in Cca-s1,d1,a1 there, on request. The wiring inside a control panel or machine is not covered by that requirement, but the cables running to it are.
Construction
Conductor
Plain (bare) annealed copper, solid class 1, stranded class 2 or flexible class 5 acc. to IEC 60228 (traditional BS 5308 set: 0.5 mm² = 1/0.8 solid, 0.75 mm² = 24/0.2 flexible, 1.0 mm² = 1/1.13 solid, 1.5 mm² = 7/0.53 stranded).
Insulation
Polyethylene (PE).
Screen
Collective (overall) screen of aluminium/polyester foil in contact with a tinned copper drain wire (0.5 mm²).
Sheath
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC); black (UV-resistant) or blue for intrinsically safe circuits.
Core identification
Collective screen: pairs colour-coded to the BS 5308 Part 1 table (pair 1 black/blue, pair 2 black/green, pair 3 blue/green and so on); two pairs as a star quad in black, blue, green and brown. Individually screened pairs: each pair black/blue and numbered, black/white by agreement. Triads: colour code on request.

Min. bending radius, fixed
6 × outer diameter.
Which one do I choose?

BS 5308 Part 1 or Part 2?

BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1

  • PE insulation
  • lower capacitance

Part 2

  • PVC insulation
  • higher capacitance

The Part refers to the core insulation: Part 1 has polyethylene (PE), Part 2 PVC. PE gives a lower capacitance between the cores and therefore better properties for signal transmission. Part 1 is also available with a halogen-free LSZH sheath. Choose Part 1 when capacitance matters, such as on long HART loops, and Part 2 for ordinary measuring, control and alarm circuits.

BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1 or RE-2Y(St)Y?

BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1

  • British standard
  • BS 5308

RE-2Y(St)Y

  • European standard
  • EN 50288-7

They are counterparts: both unarmoured, with PE insulation, a collective screen with a drain wire and a PVC sheath. BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1 follows the British standard, which is withdrawn but lives on as the designation. RE-2Y(St)Y follows the European EN 50288-7. If the specification names BS 5308 or PAS 5308, choose BS 5308 Part 1 Type 1; with EN 50288-7 the choice is RE-2Y(St)Y.
