Application

BFOU(i) 250 V is the fire-resistant instrumentation cable with individually screened pairs: mica-tape barrier for circuit integrity plus a per-pair screen against crosstalk. For critical emergency and shutdown instrumentation on platforms and ships. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

BFOU(i) 250 V is a fire-resistant, flame-retardant and halogen-free instrumentation cable for fixed installation on offshore units, drilling rigs, FPSOs and ships, designed to NEK TS 606 and IEC 60092-376. The tinned copper conductors carry a mica-tape fire barrier under halogen-free EPR insulation; each pair or triad is individually screened, and the assembly is protected by a halogen-free inner sheath, a braid of tinned copper wires and a halogen-free, drilling-mud-resistant thermoset outer sheath. The cable maintains circuit integrity under fire conditions to IEC 60331 and is intended for instrumentation, communication, control, alarm and emergency-shutdown circuits in safe and hazardous areas, including installations exposed to oil, drilling fluids and drilling mud. It is not intended for power distribution.

NEK 606Fire-resistantIndividual screen

Also known as: fire-resistant offshore instrumentation cable

Applications

  • Critical instrumentation with circuit integrity and separation between signal pairs.
  • Emergency, alarm and emergency-shutdown (ESD) circuits offshore.
  • Safe and hazardous areas exposed to oil and drilling mud.

What to look out for

  • Circuit integrity to IEC 60331 plus pair screens: earth the individual screens at one end (in the instrument cabinet) and use brackets rated for the same fire time.
  • Without circuit integrity, RFOU(i) is the more cost-effective choice.
  • If one overall screen suffices, the (c) version is suitable.
Construction
Conductor
Tinned annealed stranded copper, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228. Class 5 (flexible) on request.
Fire barrier
Mica-glass tape applied over the conductor.
Insulation
Halogen-free EPR compound.
Screen
Individual screen over each pair/triad: copper-laminated polyester tape with tinned copper drain wire; screened elements laid up and wrapped with polyester tape. The tinned copper braid forms the overall screen.
Armour
Braid of tinned copper wires over a halogen-free inner sheath.
Sheath
Halogen-free, flame-retardant and drilling-mud-resistant thermoset compound (SHF2), grey; blue for intrinsically safe circuits.
Core identification
Pair: black / light blue; triad: black / light blue / brown; elements progressively numbered.

Which one do I choose?

BFOU(i) or BFOU(c)?

BFOU(i) 250 V

  • screen per pair or triad
  • fire-resistant, IEC 60331-21

BFOU(c)

  • one screen over all pairs
  • fire-resistant, IEC 60331-21

BFOU(i) has its own screen with a drain wire around each pair or triad; BFOU(c) has one screen over all pairs together. Both are fire-resistant to IEC 60331-21. Choose BFOU(i) for critical circuits where signals must not affect each other, such as emergency shutdown and alarm circuits. If a common screen is sufficient, BFOU(c) is the choice.

BFOU(i) or RFOU(i)?

BFOU(i) 250 V

  • fire-resistant, with mica tape
  • circuit keeps working in a fire

RFOU(i)

  • flame-retardant
  • circuit fails in a fire

Both have a screen per pair, but only BFOU(i) is fire-resistant. The mica tape under the EPR insulation maintains the circuit during a fire to IEC 60331-21. RFOU(i) is flame-retardant: the cable does not spread fire, but the circuit fails in a fire. Choose BFOU(i) for emergency, alarm and shutdown circuits, and RFOU(i) for measuring circuits with no circuit-integrity requirement.
