RFOU(i) 250 V
NEK 606 offshore instrumentation cable, individually screened pairs
RFOU(i) 250 V is the offshore instrumentation cable with individually screened pairs: each pair has its own screen, and a braid forms the overall screen. It is the cable to choose where crosstalk between signal pairs is critical. Halogen-free and drilling-mud-resistant. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
RFOU(i) 250 V is a flame-retardant, halogen-free instrumentation and control cable for fixed installation on offshore units, drilling rigs, FPSOs and ships, designed to NEK TS 606 and IEC 60092-376. The tinned copper conductors are insulated with halogen-free EPR and twisted into pairs, each pair having its own screen of copper-laminated polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire; the assembled pairs are protected by a halogen-free inner sheath, a braid of tinned copper wires and a halogen-free, drilling-mud-resistant thermoset outer sheath. The individual screens make the cable suitable for instrumentation, communication, control and alarm circuits requiring separation between signal pairs, in safe and hazardous areas, including installations exposed to oil, drilling fluids and drilling mud. It is not intended for power distribution or for applications requiring fire-resistant (circuit-integrity) cable.
Also known as: offshore instrumentation cable
Applications
- Instrumentation circuits that require separation between signal pairs.
- Measuring, communication and alarm circuits offshore with strict crosstalk limits.
- Safe and hazardous areas exposed to oil and drilling mud.
What to look out for
- Earth the individual pair screens at one end (in the instrument cabinet) and carry them through junction boxes without earthing; otherwise earth currents flow through the screen.
- If one overall screen suffices, the (c) version is more cost-effective.
- Conductor
- Tinned annealed stranded copper, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228. Class 5 (flexible) on request.
- Insulation
- Halogen-free EPR compound.
- Screen
- Individual screen on every pair: copper-laminated polyester tape with tinned copper drain wire; pairs separated by polyester tape. The tinned copper braid forms the overall screen; there is no separate collective foil screen. A version with an additional collective screen, RFOU(i&c), is available on request.
- Armour
- Braid of tinned copper wires over a halogen-free inner sheath.
- Sheath
- Halogen-free, flame-retardant and drilling-mud-resistant thermoset compound (SHF2), grey; blue for intrinsically safe circuits.
- Core identification
- Pair: black / light blue; triple: black / light blue / brown; elements progressively numbered.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 150/250 V (max. operating voltage 300 V).
- Test voltage
- 1.5 kV.
- Standard
- NEK TS 606 (type S101); design acc. to IEC 60092-376; materials acc. to IEC 60092-360; conductors acc. to IEC 60228.
- Flame-retardant
- Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2 and IEC 60332-3-22 Cat. A.
- Halogen-free
- Acc. to IEC 60754-1/-2; low smoke density acc. to IEC 61034-1/-2.
- Drilling-mud resistant
- Yes, sheath resistant to oil and drilling mud acc. to NEK TS 606.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +90 °C.
- Permitted outer cable temperature, fixed
- −20 °C to +90 °C.
- Min. bending radius, fixed
- 6 × outer diameter (8 × outer diameter during installation).
RFOU(i) or RFOU(c)?
RFOU(i) 250 V
- own screen on each pair
- braid as overall screen
RFOU(c)
- no screen per pair
- one collective screen
RFOU(i) has its own screen of copper-laminated tape with a drain wire around each pair, and the tinned copper braid serves as the overall screen. RFOU(c) has no screen per pair, just one collective screen over all pairs. Choose RFOU(i) when signals from different circuits must not affect each other or when each screen has to be earthed separately. If that is not needed, RFOU(c) is sufficient.

RFOU(i) 250 V
- flame-retardant, not fire-resistant
- screen per pair
BFOU(i)
- mica tape, IEC 60331-21
- screen per pair
The same build with a screen per pair, but different fire behaviour. BFOU(i) has a mica tape under the insulation and maintains the circuit during a fire to IEC 60331-21. RFOU(i) is flame-retardant, not fire-resistant. Choose BFOU(i) for emergency shutdown, alarm and other safety circuits that must keep working in a fire, and RFOU(i) for ordinary measuring circuits.
