Application

BFOU 0.6/1 kV is the fire-resistant version of RFOU: a mica-tape barrier under the insulation keeps the circuit working in a fire, with circuit integrity to IEC 60331. For emergency and safety circuits on platforms and ships: fire-fighting, emergency lighting, emergency shutdown (ESD) and alarm. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

BFOU 0.6/1 kV is a fire-resistant, flame-retardant, halogen-free and drilling-mud-resistant power and control cable for fixed installation on offshore units, drilling rigs, FPSOs and ships, designed to NEK TS 606 (code P5/P12, now P105) and IEC 60092-353. The tinned copper conductors carry a mica-tape fire barrier under the halogen-free EPR insulation, so that the circuit remains functional during a fire to IEC 60331; the cores are protected by a halogen-free inner sheath, a braid of tinned copper wires and a halogen-free, drilling-mud-resistant thermoset outer sheath. The cable is intended for emergency and safety circuits that must keep operating in a fire, such as fire-fighting, emergency lighting, shutdown and alarm systems, as well as general power, lighting and control circuits below 1 kV in safe and hazardous areas, including locations exposed to oil, drilling fluids and drilling mud.

NEK 606Fire-resistantHalogen-free

Also known as: fire-resistant offshore cable

Applications

  • Emergency and safety circuits that must keep operating in a fire.
  • Fire-fighting, emergency lighting, shutdown and alarm systems offshore.
  • General power, lighting and control circuits below 1 kV in safe and hazardous areas.

What to look out for

  • Circuit integrity to IEC 60331 applies to the cable; brackets, penetrations and terminals must survive the same fire time, or the circuit fails anyway. Metal brackets, no plastic.
  • For circuits without circuit integrity, RFOU is sufficient and more cost-effective.

Which one do I choose?

BFOU or BU?

BFOU 0.6/1 kV

  • inner sheath and tinned braid
  • mechanical protection and screen

BU

  • unarmoured
  • lighter and more flexible

Both are fire-resistant: a mica tape under the EPR insulation keeps the circuit working in a fire to IEC 60331-21. BFOU also has an inner sheath and a braid of tinned copper wires, for mechanical protection and as a metallic screen. BU is unarmoured and therefore lighter and more flexible. Choose BFOU where the cable can be damaged or a screen is needed, and BU on protected routes.

BFOU 0.6/1 kV or BFOU(c) 250 V?

BFOU 0.6/1 kV

  • power cable below 1 kV
  • emergency lighting and extinguishing systems

BFOU(c) 250 V

  • instrumentation cable
  • measuring, control and alarm signals

Both keep the circuit working in a fire. BFOU 0.6/1 kV is the power cable for emergency and safety circuits below 1 kV, such as emergency lighting and fire-extinguishing systems. BFOU(c) 250 V is the instrumentation cable with twisted pairs under a collective screen, for measuring, control and alarm signals. Power therefore runs over BFOU 0.6/1 kV, and signals that must keep working in a fire over BFOU(c).
