BFOU(c) 250 V
NEK 606 offshore fire-resistant instrumentation cable, collective screen
BFOU(c) 250 V is the fire-resistant instrumentation cable with a collective screen: mica-tape barrier for circuit integrity to IEC 60331, twisted pairs under one overall screen. For emergency and safety instrumentation on platforms and ships. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
BFOU(c) 250 V is a fire-resistant, flame-retardant and halogen-free instrumentation and control cable for fixed installation on offshore units, drilling rigs, FPSOs and ships, designed to NEK TS 606 and IEC 60092-376. The tinned copper conductors carry a mica-tape fire barrier under the halogen-free EPR insulation, are twisted into pairs and protected by a collective screen, a braid of tinned copper wires and a halogen-free, drilling-mud-resistant thermoset outer sheath. The cable maintains circuit integrity under fire conditions and is intended for instrumentation, communication, control, alarm and emergency-system circuits in safe and hazardous areas, including installations exposed to oil, drilling fluids and drilling mud. It is not intended for power distribution.
Also known as: fire-resistant offshore instrumentation cable
Applications
- Emergency and safety instrumentation that must keep working in a fire.
- Control, alarm and communication circuits with circuit integrity offshore.
- Intrinsically safe circuits (blue sheath) in hazardous areas.
What to look out for
- Circuit integrity to IEC 60331 applies to the cable; brackets, penetrations and terminals must survive the same fire time, or the circuit fails anyway. Metal brackets, no plastic.
- Without circuit integrity, RFOU(c) suffices and is more cost-effective.
- If separation between pairs is needed, choose the individually screened (i) version.
- Conductor
- Tinned annealed stranded copper, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228. Class 5 (flexible) on request.
- Fire barrier
- Mica/glass tape applied over the conductor.
- Insulation
- Halogen-free EPR compound.
- Screen
- Collective screen over the assembled pairs: copper-laminated polyester tape with tinned copper drain wire.
- Armour
- Braid of tinned copper wires over a halogen-free inner sheath.
- Sheath
- Halogen-free, flame-retardant and drilling-mud-resistant thermoset compound (SHF2), grey; blue for intrinsically safe circuits.
- Core identification
- Pair: black / light blue; pairs progressively numbered.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 150/250 V (max. operating voltage 300 V).
- Test voltage
- 1.5 kV.
- Standard
- NEK TS 606; design acc. to IEC 60092-376; conductors acc. to IEC 60228.
- Fire-resistant
- Circuit integrity acc. to IEC 60331-21.
- Flame-retardant
- Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2 and IEC 60332-3-22 Cat. A.
- Halogen-free
- Acc. to IEC 60754-1; low smoke density acc. to IEC 61034-1/-2.
- Drilling-mud resistant
- Yes, sheath resistant to oil and drilling mud acc. to NEK TS 606.
- Max. conductor temperature

- Reaction to fire (CPR)
- Outside the scope of EN 50575 (offshore and shipboard cable).
BFOU(c) or BFOU(i)?
BFOU(c) 250 V
- one collective screen
- mica tape, IEC 60331-21
BFOU(i)
- screen per pair or triad
- mica tape, IEC 60331-21
Both are fire-resistant with a mica tape to IEC 60331-21. BFOU(c) has one collective screen over all pairs, and BFOU(i) its own screen with a drain wire around each pair or triad. Choose BFOU(i) where signals from different circuits must stay separated or each screen is earthed separately, and BFOU(c) when a common screen is sufficient.
View BFOU(i) 250 V →BFOU(c) 250 V or BFOU 0.6/1 kV?
BFOU(c) 250 V
- instrumentation cable, 150/250 V
- measuring, control and alarm signals
BFOU 0.6/1 kV
- power cable below 1 kV
- emergency lighting and extinguishing systems
Both keep the circuit working in a fire. BFOU(c) 250 V is the instrumentation cable for 150/250 V, with twisted pairs under a collective screen, for measuring, control and alarm signals. BFOU 0.6/1 kV is the power cable for emergency and safety circuits below 1 kV, such as emergency lighting and fire-extinguishing systems. Signals therefore go over BFOU(c), and power over BFOU 0.6/1 kV.
