Application

RFOU 0.6/1 kV is the standard braid-armoured offshore power cable to NEK TS 606: halogen-free, flame-retardant and resistant to oil and drilling mud. The tinned copper braid provides mechanical protection and earthing. For platforms, FPSOs and ships. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

RFOU 0.6/1 kV is a flame-retardant, halogen-free and drilling-mud-resistant power and control cable for fixed installation on offshore units, drilling rigs, FPSOs and ships, designed to NEK TS 606 (code P1/P8, now P101) and IEC 60092-353. The tinned copper conductors are insulated with halogen-free EPR and protected by a halogen-free inner sheath, a braid of tinned copper wires and a halogen-free, drilling-mud-resistant thermoset outer sheath. The cable is intended for power distribution, lighting, control and trace-heating circuits below 1 kV in safe and hazardous areas, including locations exposed to oil, drilling fluids and drilling mud. It is not intended for applications requiring fire-resistant (circuit-integrity) cable.

Also known as: offshore cable

Applications

  • Power distribution, lighting and control below 1 kV on offshore installations.
  • Safe and hazardous areas, including where oil, drilling fluid and mud are present.
  • Fixed installation on platforms, drill ships, FPSOs and vessels.

What to look out for

  • Flame-retardant, not fire-resistant: for circuit integrity in a fire choose BFOU.
  • Earth the tinned copper braid at both ends through EMC glands (360°); as protective conductor only if the specification allows it, otherwise a separate earth core.

Which one do I choose?

RFOU or RU?

RFOU 0.6/1 kV

  • inner sheath
  • tinned copper braid
  • mechanical protection and screen

RU

  • no inner sheath
  • no braid
  • lighter and more flexible

The difference is the braid. RFOU has an inner sheath and a braid of tinned copper wires under the outer sheath, for mechanical protection and as a metallic screen. RU has the same EPR insulation and SHF2 outer sheath, but no inner sheath and no braid, which makes it lighter and more flexible. Choose RFOU where the cable can be damaged or a metallic screen is needed, and RU on protected routes.

RFOU 0.6/1 kV or RFOU(c) 250 V?

RFOU 0.6/1 kV

  • power cable
  • below 1 kV
  • supply, lighting and control

RFOU(c) 250 V

  • instrumentation cable
  • 150/250 V
  • measuring, communication and alarm circuits

RFOU 0.6/1 kV is the power cable, for supply, lighting and control below 1 kV. RFOU(c) 250 V is the instrumentation cable for 150/250 V, with twisted pairs under a collective screen, for measuring, communication and alarm circuits. For power you therefore choose RFOU 0.6/1 kV, and for low-level signals that need screening RFOU(c).
