BU 0.6/1 kV
NEK 606 offshore fire-resistant power cable, halogen-free, unarmoured
BU 0.6/1 kV is the fire-resistant, unarmoured offshore power cable: mica-tape barrier for circuit integrity in a fire, without the copper braid. For emergency and safety circuits in safe areas where no armour is needed. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
BU 0.6/1 kV is a fire-resistant, flame-retardant, halogen-free and drilling-mud-resistant power and control cable for fixed installation on offshore units, drilling rigs, FPSOs and ships, designed to NEK TS 606 (code P17, now P110) and IEC 60092-353. The tinned copper conductors are wrapped with a mica tape fire barrier, insulated with halogen-free EPR and protected by a halogen-free, flame-retardant and drilling-mud-resistant thermoset outer sheath; the cable has no braid armour. It is intended for power, lighting and control circuits below 1 kV that must keep functioning during a fire, such as emergency and safety systems, fire-fighting circuits and other critical services in safe areas. Where mechanical protection or electromagnetic screening by a metal braid is required, the armoured version (BFOU) should be used instead.
Also known as: fire-resistant offshore cable
Applications
- Emergency and safety circuits with circuit integrity where no armour is needed.
- Fire-fighting circuits and critical services below 1 kV in safe areas.
- Protected routes on platforms, FPSOs and ships.
What to look out for
- Unarmoured: where mechanical protection or a metallic EMC screen is needed, choose BFOU.
- Circuit integrity to IEC 60331 applies to the cable; brackets, penetrations and terminals must survive the same fire time, or the circuit fails anyway. Metal brackets, no plastic.
- Conductor
- Tinned annealed stranded circular copper, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228.
- Fire barrier
- Mica (glass) tape applied over the conductor.
- Insulation
- Halogen-free EPR compound.
- Outer sheath
- Halogen-free, flame-retardant and drilling-mud-resistant thermoset compound (SHF2), black; no armour.
- Core identification
- Up to 4 cores: coloured cores acc. to NEK TS 606 (1: black; 2: blue, brown; 3: brown, black, grey; 4: blue, brown, black, grey); 5 cores and more: white cores with black numbers.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 0.6/1 kV (max. operating voltage 1.2 kV).
- Test voltage
- 3.5 kV.
- Standard
- NEK TS 606 (code P17 / P110); design acc. to IEC 60092-353; conductors acc. to IEC 60228.
- Fire-resistant
- Acc. to IEC 60331-21 (IEC 60331-1/-2).
- Flame-retardant
- Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2 and IEC 60332-3-22 Cat. A.
- Halogen-free
- Acc. to IEC 60754-1/-2; low smoke density acc. to IEC 61034-1/-2.
- Drilling-mud resistant
- Yes, sheath resistant to oil and drilling mud acc. to NEK TS 606.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +90 °C.
- Permitted outer cable temperature, fixed
- −15 °C to +90 °C.
- Min. bending radius, fixed
- 6 × outer diameter (8 × outer diameter during installation).
- Reaction to fire (CPR)
- Outside the scope of EN 50575 (offshore and shipboard cable).
BU or BFOU?
BU 0.6/1 kV
- no braid
- circuit integrity, IEC 60331
BFOU
- inner sheath and tinned braid
- circuit integrity, IEC 60331
BU is the unarmoured fire-resistant cable: mica tape and EPR insulation under a halogen-free SHF2 sheath, without a braid. BFOU also has circuit integrity to IEC 60331, plus an inner sheath and a tinned copper braid. BU is lighter and more flexible and suits protected routes. If the cable can be mechanically damaged or a metallic screen is needed, it becomes BFOU.

BU 0.6/1 kV
- circuit integrity, IEC 60331-21
- unarmoured and halogen-free
RU
- flame-retardant only
- unarmoured and halogen-free
Both are unarmoured and halogen-free, with EPR insulation and an SHF2 sheath. BU also has a mica tape around each conductor and keeps working in a fire to IEC 60331-21. RU is flame-retardant only. Choose BU for circuits that need circuit integrity, such as emergency and safety systems, and RU for ordinary power and control circuits.
