NA2XSY
Single-core aluminium XLPE medium-voltage cable, copper wire screen, PVC sheath, 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV
NA2XSY is the aluminium MV cable with a PVC sheath for indoor use, substations and ducts (not longitudinally watertight). For wet ground choose NA2XS(F)2Y. In all five voltage classes. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
NA2XSY is a single-core medium-voltage power cable with a stranded aluminium conductor, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, a copper wire screen with copper counter helix and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer sheath, designed to IEC 60502-2 and DIN VDE 0276-620 (HD 620). It is the aluminium version of N2XSY, used for fixed installation indoors, in switchgear and substations, in cable ducts, on trays and racks, and for terminations and connections between transformers, switchgear and distribution boards in the 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV classes (Um 12 to 42 kV). The extruded inner and outer semi-conductive screens give a smooth electrical field; the copper wire screen carries earth-fault and capacitive currents. NA2XSY is PVC-sheathed and not longitudinally watertight, so in wet ground we recommend the longitudinally watertight NA2XS(F)2Y.
Also known as: medium voltage cable
Applications
- Switchgear, substations and indoor routes on trays and racks.
- Aluminium where weight and cost matter, indoors and in ducts.
What to look out for
- Not longitudinally watertight: if the sheath is damaged, water can travel along the length of the cable. In wet ground we recommend NA2XS(F)2Y.
- The copper counterpart is N2XSY.
- Conductor
- Stranded round aluminium, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228 / DIN VDE 0295.
- Conductor screen
- Extruded semi-conductive compound (inner conductive layer).
- Insulation
- Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) acc. to HD 620 (compound DIX8); nominal thickness per voltage class (3.4 mm at 6/10 kV, 4.5 mm at 8.7/15 kV, 5.5 mm at 12/20 kV, 8.0 mm at 18/30 kV; on request at 20.8/36 kV).
- Insulation screen
- Extruded semi-conductive compound (outer conductive layer) with semi-conductive tape.
- Metallic screen
- Copper wire screen (CWS) with copper counter helix; nominal screen cross-section per size (e.g. 16 / 25 / 35 mm²).
- Separator
- Binder tape over the screen.
- Outer sheath
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) acc. to HD 620 (compound DMV6), red.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 6/10 (12) to 20.8/36 (42) kV.
- Test voltage
- 3.5 × Uo for 5 min (routine test acc. to IEC 60502-2): 21 kV at 6/10, 30.5 kV at 8.7/15, 42 kV at 12/20 and 63 kV at 18/30 kV; on request at 20.8/36 kV.
- Standard
- IEC 60502-2 up to and including 18/30 kV; DIN VDE 0276-620 (HD 620 section 10-C) for 6/10, 12/20 and 18/30 kV; 20.8/36 kV constructed following DIN VDE 0276-620; conductors acc. to IEC 60228.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +90 °C (normal operation).
- Max. short-circuit temperature
- +250 °C (max. 5 s).
- Flame-retardant
- Acc. to IEC 60332-1-2 (single vertical cable).
- Min. bending radius, fixed
- 15 × outer diameter (single-core).

NA2XSY or N2XSY?
NA2XSY
- aluminium conductor
- larger cross-section
N2XSY
- copper conductor
- smaller cross-section
NA2XSY is the aluminium version of N2XSY, with the same XLPE insulation, copper wire screen and PVC sheath. Aluminium is lighter and more economical, but needs a larger cross-section for the same current. Choose NA2XSY where weight and cost weigh more, N2XSY where the cable must stay as compact as possible.

NA2XSY
- no swelling tapes
NA2XS(F)Y
- swelling tapes under and over screen
NA2XSY and NA2XS(F)Y both have an aluminium conductor and a PVC sheath. The difference is the (F): NA2XS(F)Y has swelling tapes under and over the wire screen, so water cannot travel along the cable after damage. NA2XSY has no swelling tapes and suits indoor use, substations, switchgear and ducts. In permanently wet ground choose NA2XS(F)Y.
