EAXeCWB
Single-core Al XLPE MV cable, Cu wire screen, longitudinally watertight, 8.7/15 to 20.8/36 kV
EAXeCWB is the Belgian designation (NBN HD 620) for the aluminium MV cable (comparable to NA2XS(F)2Y): XLPE, a copper wire screen and a longitudinally watertight screen (e) under a PE sheath (W), for the distribution network. In all four voltage classes. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
EAXeCWB is a single-core medium-voltage distribution cable for the Belgian public grid: an aluminium conductor, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, a copper wire screen (CWS) with copper counter-helix, and a polyethylene (PE) outer sheath. It is the Belgian designation (NBN HD 620), comparable to, but not identical with, the German NA2XS(F)2Y (different national standard). The 'e' denotes a longitudinally watertight screen: semi-conductive swellable water-blocking tapes under and over the wire screen stop any water from travelling along the cable. The 'W' denotes the PE sheath. EAXeCWB is intended for fixed installation, direct burial and duct laying in distribution networks; the watertight screen and PE sheath suit permanently wet ground conditions. Available in the 8.7/15, 12/20, 18/30 and 20.8/36 kV classes.
Also known as: medium voltage cable
Applications
- Distribution network: direct burial, in ducts and along routes, also in wet ground.
- Connections between substations, transformers and switchgear.
What to look out for
- The e stands for the longitudinally watertight screen, the W for the PE sheath. Need halogen-free? Then it is EAXeCGB.
- Choose the voltage class based on the Um of the network (17.5, 24, 36 or 42 kV): insulation thickness runs from 4.5 to 8.8 mm. The outer diameter and the size of joints and terminations change with it.
- Conductor
- Round stranded (RM) aluminium, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228.
- Conductor screen
- Extruded semi-conductive cross-linked compound over the conductor.
- Insulation
- Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) acc. to IEC 60502-2 / HD 620.
- Insulation screen
- Extruded semi-conductive cross-linked compound, strippable.
- Metallic screen
- Copper wire screen (CWS) with a copper counter-helix tape, made longitudinally watertight (e) by semi-conductive swellable water-blocking tapes applied under and over the wire screen. Nominal screen 16 mm² (25/35 mm² for larger conductors, per design).
- Outer sheath
- Polyethylene (PE), red or black, UV-resistant (W). The version with a halogen-free sheath is EAXeCGB (G).
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- (Um) 8.7/15 (17.5) kV; also 12/20 (24), 18/30 (36) and 20.8/36 (42) kV.
- Standard
- IEC 60502-2 up to and including 18/30 kV; NBN HD 620 part 10 section B (Belgian section), also for 20.8/36 kV; conductor IEC 60228. EAXe is the Belgian designation; comparable to, but not identical with, the German NA2XS(F)2Y.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +90 °C (continuous, XLPE).
- Max. short-circuit temperature
- +250 °C (max. 5 s).
- Test voltage
- 30.5 kV AC at 8.7/15 kV, 42 kV at 12/20 kV, 63 kV at 18/30 kV, 73 kV at 20.8/36 kV (3.5 × Uo, routine test).
- Min. bending radius, single-core
- 15 × outer diameter.
Voltage classes
| Voltage class Uo/U | Highest voltage Um | Insulation nom. |
|---|---|---|
| 8.7/15 kV | 17.5 kV | 4.5 mm |
| 12/20 kV | 24 kV | 5.5 mm |
| 18/30 kV | 36 kV | 8.0 mm |
| 20.8/36 kV | 42 kV | 8.8 mm |
EAXeCWB or EAXeCGB?
EAXeCWB
- PE sheath
EAXeCGB
- halogen-free sheath
Conductor, XLPE insulation and the longitudinally watertight copper wire screen are the same. The difference is the sheath: EAXeCWB has a PE sheath, EAXeCGB is the version with a halogen-free sheath (the G). Choose EAXeCGB when the specification or the network operator asks for that halogen-free sheath; otherwise EAXeCWB will do.

EAXeCWB
- NBN HD 620 (Belgium)
- 8.7/15 to 20.8/36 kV
NA2XS(F)2Y
- VDE 0276-620 (Germany)
- also 6/10 kV
Both are single-core aluminium medium-voltage cables with XLPE insulation, a longitudinally watertight copper wire screen and a PE sheath. EAXeCWB is the Belgian type to NBN HD 620 and comes from 8.7/15 to 20.8/36 kV. NA2XS(F)2Y is the German type to VDE 0276-620 and also comes in 6/10 kV. They are similar but not identical, so choose the type named by the network operator or the specification.
