Application

N2XSY is the copper MV cable with a PVC sheath for indoor use, substations and ducts (not longitudinally watertight). N2XSY is available in all five voltage classes. For wet ground choose N2XS(F)2Y. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

N2XSY is a single-core medium-voltage power cable with a bare stranded copper conductor, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, a copper wire screen with copper counter helix and a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) outer sheath, designed to IEC 60502-2 and DIN VDE 0276-620 (HD 620). It is used for fixed installation indoors, in switchgear and substations, in cable ducts, on cable ladders and trays, and for terminations and connections between transformers, switchgear and distribution boards in the 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV classes (Um 12 to 42 kV). The extruded inner and outer semi-conductive screens give a smooth electrical field; the copper wire screen carries earth-fault and capacitive currents. N2XSY is PVC-sheathed and not longitudinally watertight, so in wet ground we recommend the longitudinally watertight N2XS(F)2Y.

Also known as: medium voltage cable

Applications

  • Switchgear, substations and indoor routes on cable ladders and trays.
  • Connections between transformers, switchgear and distribution boards.

What to look out for

  • Not longitudinally watertight: if the sheath is damaged, water can travel along the length of the cable. In wet ground we recommend N2XS(F)2Y.
  • The aluminium counterpart is NA2XSY.

Which one do I choose?

N2XSY or N2XS(F)2Y?

N2XSY

  • red PVC sheath
  • no swelling tapes

N2XS(F)2Y

  • PE sheath
  • swelling tapes at the screen

N2XSY has a red PVC sheath and no swelling tapes, so it is not longitudinally watertight. N2XS(F)2Y has swelling tapes at the screen and a PE sheath, and is made for direct burial. Choose N2XSY for switchgear, substations and indoor routes on trays and ladders. If the cable goes into the ground, especially wet ground, choose N2XS(F)2Y.

N2XSY or NA2XSY?

N2XSY

  • copper conductor
  • smaller cross-section

NA2XSY

  • aluminium conductor
  • larger cross-section

N2XSY has a copper conductor, NA2XSY aluminium. XLPE insulation, copper wire screen, red PVC sheath and the classes from 6/10 to 20.8/36 kV are the same. Aluminium is lighter and more economical, but needs a larger cross-section for the same current. Choose N2XSY where space is tight; NA2XSY where weight and cost weigh more.
