NA2XS(F)Y
Single-core aluminium XLPE MV cable, copper wire screen, longitudinally watertight, PVC sheath, 6/10 to 18/30 kV
NA2XS(F)Y is the longitudinally watertight medium-voltage cable with a PVC sheath: single-core aluminium, XLPE insulation, copper wire screen with counter helix and swelling tapes against water ingress, to IEC 60502-2 and HD 620. Available from 6/10 to 18/30 kV; we supply the common 1×95/16 mm² 12/20 kV on a project basis.
NA2XS(F)Y is the longitudinally watertight version of NA2XSY: a single-core aluminium medium-voltage cable with a stranded aluminium conductor, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, a copper wire screen (CWS) with copper counter helix and a PVC outer sheath, to IEC 60502-2 and HD 620. The (F) denotes semi-conductive and non-conductive water-blocking tapes under and over the wire screen that stop water from travelling along the cable, so it suits fixed installation, direct burial and duct laying in distribution networks, including permanently wet ground. Available in the 6/10 to 18/30 kV voltage classes. The common size 1×95/16 mm² 12/20 kV has a red sheath; its dimensions and current rating are in the size table below.
Also known as: medium voltage cable
Applications
- Distribution networks and grid connections from 6/10 to 18/30 kV in duct or open trench.
- Links between transformers, switchgear and distribution boards in industry and solar parks.
- Extension or repair of existing routes with PVC-sheathed cable.
What to look out for
- PVC sheath: not halogen-free and less abrasion resistant than PE when pulling through long ducts; for direct burial, NA2XS(F)2Y is the usual choice.
- Choose the voltage class based on the Um of the network (12, 17.5, 24 or 36 kV): insulation thickness runs from 3.4 to 8 mm. The outer diameter and the size of joints and terminations change with it.
- Copper wire screen 16, 25 or 35 mm²: let the earth-fault current of the network determine the screen cross-section you need.
- Project supply: the lead time is stated in the quote.
- Conductor
- Stranded compacted circular (RM) aluminium, class 2 acc. to IEC 60228.
- Conductor screen
- Extruded semi-conductive compound (inner conductive layer).
- Insulation
- Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) acc. to HD 620 (compound DIX8); nominal thickness per voltage class, 5.5 mm at 12/20 kV.
- Insulation screen
- Extruded semi-conductive compound, bonded to the insulation.
- Water protection, before screen
- Semi-conductive water blocking tape, suitable overlap.
- Metallic screen
- Copper wire screen (CWS) with copper counter helix; nominal screen cross-section per size (e.g. 16 / 25 / 35 mm²).
- Water protection, after screen
- Non-conductive water blocking tape, suitable overlap.
- Outer sheath
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) acc. to HD 620 (compound DMV6), red.
- Rated voltage Uo/U
- 6/10 (12) to 18/30 (36) kV; 1×95/16 mm² in 12/20 (24) kV.
- Test voltage
- 3.5 × Uo for 5 min (routine test acc. to IEC 60502-2); 42 kV AC at 12/20 kV.
- Standard
- IEC 60502-2; DIN VDE 0276-620 (HD 620 section 10-C) for 6/10, 12/20 and 18/30 kV; conductor IEC 60228.
- Max. conductor temperature
- +90 °C (normal operation).
- Max. short-circuit temperature
- +250 °C (max. 5 s).
- Min. bending radius, fixed
- 15 × outer diameter (single-core).

NA2XS(F)Y or NA2XS(F)2Y?
NA2XS(F)Y
- PVC sheath
- up to 18/30 kV
NA2XS(F)2Y
- PE sheath
- also 20.8/36 kV
Both are single-core aluminium medium-voltage cables with XLPE insulation, a copper wire screen and swelling tapes that stop water travelling along the cable. The difference is the sheath: NA2XS(F)Y has PVC, NA2XS(F)2Y PE. NA2XS(F)Y comes from 6/10 to 18/30 kV, NA2XS(F)2Y also in 20.8/36 kV. For direct burial NA2XS(F)2Y is the usual choice; NA2XS(F)Y suits extending or repairing a route with PVC-sheathed cable.

NA2XS(F)Y
- swelling tapes under and over screen
NA2XSY
- no swelling tapes
Both have an aluminium conductor, XLPE insulation, a copper wire screen and a PVC sheath. NA2XS(F)Y has swelling tapes under and over the wire screen, so water cannot travel along the cable after damage; NA2XSY does not. In permanently wet ground choose NA2XS(F)Y. Indoors, in substations, in switchgear and in ducts, NA2XSY will do.
