Application

Cat 6A F/FTP is the double-screened 10G cable: a foil per pair plus an overall foil, LSZH, for noisy and industrial networks. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

Cat 6A F/FTP is a fully foil-screened four-pair Category 6A data installation cable for structured building cabling, supplied on a reel for horizontal permanent links. Each of the four pairs is built from two solid bare-copper AWG23 conductors insulated with polyethylene (PE / foam-skin PE) and wrapped in its own aluminium/polyester foil; the four foiled pairs are then enclosed by an additional overall aluminium/polyester foil (usually with a tinned-copper continuity/drain wire in contact with it) under a low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) outer sheath (F = overall foil screen, FTP = foiled twisted pairs). In this double-foil construction the per-pair foils suppress pair-to-pair crosstalk while the overall foil provides an all-round common screen that strongly limits the alien crosstalk between neighbouring cables that constrains 10GBASE-T. It gives excellent alien-crosstalk control, delivers Class EA performance to 500 MHz, supports 10GBASE-T to 100 m, all lower Ethernet grades and Power over Ethernet up to IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4), and terminates on screened RJ45 modules. The LSZH sheath (CPR Dca or B2ca) suits indoor routing in public buildings (the required class depends on the building use and the type of space, Bbl table 4.42); a PVC-sheathed Eca variant is offered for less demanding environments. A braid-screened S/FTP variant is preferred for heavy-EMI or industrial routes, and a foiled-pair-only U/FTP variant where an overall screen is not required.

Cat 6A10 GigabitF/FTP

Also known as: screened network cable · 10 gigabit cable

Applications

  • 10GBASE-T in industry and high-interference environments.
  • Data centres and critical networks with high EMC demands.

What to look out for

  • Screening only works if the whole channel is screened: cable, jacks, patch panel and patch cords; earthing runs through the patch panel to the rack earth.
  • For a braided overall screen choose S/FTP.

Which one do I choose?

Cat 6A F/FTP or S/FTP?

Cat 6A F/FTP

  • second foil with drain wire
  • no braid

S/FTP

  • tinned copper braid
  • mechanically more robust

Both have a foil around each pair. F/FTP adds a second foil with a drain wire around them, S/FTP a tinned copper braid. The braid makes S/FTP mechanically more robust and better against low-frequency interference. Where the interference or the mechanical load is heaviest, choose S/FTP; otherwise F/FTP is sufficient.

Cat 6A F/FTP or U/FTP?

Cat 6A F/FTP

  • foil around the whole core
  • foil around each pair

U/FTP

  • no overall screen
  • foil around each pair

Both have a foil around each pair and carry 10GBASE-T over 100 m. F/FTP also has a foil around the whole core, which further limits external interference and crosstalk between neighbouring cables. U/FTP has no such overall screen. Choose F/FTP in industrial environments and places with a lot of interference, and U/FTP for ordinary office and data centre cabling.
