RG59

75 ohm coaxial cable for CCTV, analogue video and SDI

CPR Eca EN 50117-1

Application

RG59 is the thin, flexible 75 ohm coax for CCTV and analogue video: handy for short to medium camera links. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.

RG59 is a 75 ohm coaxial cable for CCTV, analogue video and SDI. The solid copper inner conductor sits in a PE dielectric, surrounded by aluminium foil and a tinned copper braid, with a PVC outer sheath. RG59 is thinner and more flexible than RG6, which makes it easy to work with on short to medium video and camera links; for longer runs or satellite and antenna work, choose RG6 with its lower attenuation.

75 ΩCCTVVideo

Also known as: coax cable · 75 ohm coax · CCTV cable · video cable

Applications

  • CCTV and analogue video links over short to medium distances.
  • SDI and video signals in security and AV installations.

What to look out for

  • Higher attenuation than RG6; for long runs or satellite choose RG6.
  • For CCTV, use the correct 75 ohm connectors (BNC or F).
  • CPR class Eca in PVC. Where the cable is installed permanently in a building and exposed to indoor air, the Bbl requires at least Dca; choose the halogen-free version in Dca or B2ca there, on request.
Construction
Conductor
Solid bare copper, 20 AWG (nominal 0.81 mm); classic RG59 B/U: copper-clad steel (CCS) approx. 0.58 mm.
Dielectric
Polyethylene, nominal 3.7 mm: foam PE (SDI grade) or solid PE (classic B/U).
Screen
Aluminium/polyester foil plus tinned copper braid.
Sheath
PVC, black or white; other colours on request.
Electrical & thermal properties
Reaction to fire (CPR)
Eca as standard (EN 50575); LSZH version (Dca/B2ca) on request.
Characteristic impedance
75 Ω.
Capacitance
Approx. 53 pF/m (foam PE, SDI grade); classic solid-PE RG59 B/U approx. 67–72 pF/m.
Velocity of propagation
Approx. 82% (foam PE); solid PE approx. 66%.
Attenuation
Higher than RG6; suited to short and medium runs.
Applications
CCTV, analogue video, SDI.
Which one do I choose?

RG59 or RG6?

RG59

  • about 6.0 mm thick
  • thinner inner conductor
  • higher attenuation

RG6

  • 6.9 mm thick
  • thicker inner conductor
  • lower attenuation

RG59 is thinner than RG6 (about 6.0 against 6.9 mm) and more flexible, which makes it easier in tight spaces. RG6 has the thicker inner conductor and lower attenuation. Choose RG59 for camera and video links over short to medium distances, and RG6 for satellite and long runs.

RG59 or RG 58?

RG59

  • 75 ohm
  • CCTV, analogue video and SDI

RG 58

  • 50 ohm
  • transmitters and measuring instruments

They look alike and both are terminated with BNC, but RG59 is 75 ohm and RG 58 is 50 ohm. CCTV, analogue video and SDI work at 75 ohm, so that is where RG59 with 75 ohm connectors belongs. RG 58 is for 50 ohm equipment, such as transmitters and measuring instruments.
