Application

RG 223 U-ZH is the thin, double-screened 50 ohm coaxial cable to MIL-C-17 with a halogen-free, UV-resistant sheath: solid silvered inner conductor of 0.9 mm, PE dielectric and two silvered braids with 98% and 97% coverage, outer diameter 5.4 mm. The double-screened counterpart of RG 58 for measuring and patch connections.

Double-screened 50 ohm RF coaxial cable manufactured in compliance with MIL-C-17, with a flame-retardant, halogen-free (LSZH) outer sheath. For RF signal transmission in installation and industrial environments where little smoke and no corrosive gases may be released in a fire. The cable has CPR class Eca.

Applications

  • Measuring leads and patch connections in racks where the screening of RG 58 is not sufficient.
  • Short, thin RF links to modules and boards, halogen-free.
  • Test set-ups with SMA or BNC connectors in the RG 223 size.

What to look out for

  • Solid inner conductor (0.9 mm): not for moving applications. If the cable is bent repeatedly, keep to at least 10 × the outer diameter.
  • Attenuation comparable to RG 58, so here too: keep lengths short.
  • Connectors in the RG 223/RG 400 size, not those for RG 58.
  • CPR class Eca. Where the cable is installed permanently in a building and exposed to indoor air, the Bbl requires at least Dca. The wiring inside a control panel or piece of equipment is not covered by that requirement, but the cables running to it are.

Which one do I choose?

RG 223 or RG 58?

RG 223 U-ZH

  • 5.4 mm thick
  • double-screened

RG 58

  • about 5 mm thick
  • single-screened

RG 223 is about as thin as RG 58 (5.4 against about 5 mm), but it is double-screened with two silver-plated braids. As a result RG 223 has far higher screening effectiveness, which matters in test set-ups and with interference-sensitive equipment. RG 223 U-ZH also has a halogen-free sheath. For loose leads that move often, RG 58 with its stranded inner conductor remains more practical.

RG 223 or RG 214?

RG 223 U-ZH

  • 5.4 mm thick
  • higher attenuation

RG 214

  • 10.8 mm thick
  • much lower attenuation

Both are double-screened, but in a different size. RG 223 is 5.4 mm thick and fits tight cabinets and small connectors such as SMA. RG 214 is 10.8 mm thick and has much lower attenuation thanks to its larger inner conductor (7 × 0.75 mm) and thicker dielectric. Choose RG 223 for short links and RG 214 as soon as the length or the power goes up.
