Fibre optic universal OS2 (LSZH)
Universal indoor/outdoor singlemode OS2, LSZH
The universal OS2 runs from outdoors to indoors without a joint: loose-tube and watertight outside, LSZH and low-smoke inside, right to the patch panel. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
This universal indoor/outdoor cable is a singlemode optical fibre cable to ITU-T G.652.D (fibre category OS2) that can be laid outdoors and continued straight into the building without a transition splice. It combines an outdoor-grade, water-blocked loose-tube core with a low-smoke halogen-free (LSZH) sheath that carries a CPR reaction-to-fire class for indoor use. The 9/125 µm singlemode fibres sit in dry (or gel-filled) loose tubes around a central non-metallic strength member (FRP/GRP); aramid or glass yarns add tensile strength and act as a rodent barrier, and longitudinal water blocking keeps moisture out of the core. The construction is fully dielectric (no metal), so no earthing is needed and the cable is easy to strip and terminate. It is supplied in fibre counts up to 24 fibres and is UV-stabilised for the outdoor section. Multimode fibres (OM3 or OM4) are available on request. Typical use is the building-entry drop from an outside-plant duct or aerial route directly to the indoor optical distribution frame.
Also known as: universal fibre optic cable
Applications
- Continuous routes from outdoors into the building distributor.
- Campus and building cabling without extra joints.
What to look out for
- For pure indoor use with many patch points, tight-buffered can be handier.
- LSZH sheath for indoors: Dca as standard, B2ca on request. State the class the Bbl requires when you enquire; on an extra protected escape route that is B2ca.
- Fibre
- Singlemode OS2 (ITU-T G.652.D), 9/125 µm.
- Buffer
- Dry or gel loose tubes around a central strength member.
- Water blocking
- Longitudinally water-blocked with dry water-swellable elements or gel.
- Strength member
- Central GRP/FRP rod plus aramid yarns.
- Outer sheath
- Halogen-free, low-smoke (LSZH).
- Fibre type
- OS2 singlemode, 9/125 µm, G.652.D; multimode OM3 or OM4 on request.
- Attenuation
- Max. 0.40 dB/km at 1310 nm; max. 0.30 dB/km at 1550 nm.
- Fibre count
- Typ. 4 to 24 fibres.
- Application
- Indoors, outdoors and in ducts, continuous run to the patch panel.
- Reaction to fire
- Dca (B2ca on request); LSZH sheath for indoor routes.
Universal or outdoor loose tube?
Fibre optic universal OS2 (LSZH)
- halogen-free sheath
- class Dca
- up to 24 fibres
outdoor loose tube
- PE sheath
- no CPR class
- up to 144 fibres
The universal cable combines a longitudinally water-blocked loose-tube core with a halogen-free sheath (Dca), so it runs from outside into the patch cabinet without a joint. The fibre count goes up to 24. The outdoor loose-tube cable has a PE sheath without a CPR class, but goes up to 144 fibres. For a building connection with few fibres, choose universal, and for more than 24 fibres the outdoor cable, with a transition at the building entry.

Fibre optic universal OS2 (LSZH)
- loose tube, water-blocked
- outdoors, ducts and indoors
tight-buffered
- 900 µm buffer
- indoor only
The universal cable is a loose-tube cable with longitudinal water blocking and a UV-stabilised LSZH sheath, and can be laid outdoors, in ducts and indoors. Tight-buffered is for indoor use only, but each fibre has a 900 µm buffer and can be terminated directly without a fan-out kit. If the route runs from outside to inside, choose the universal cable; if the cable stays indoors, tight-buffered.
