Fibre optic loose-tube OS2 armoured
Outdoor loose-tube singlemode OS2, corrugated steel tape armoured
The armoured loose-tube OS2 is the rugged underground fibre: corrugated steel tape against rodents and pressure, for heavy direct burial. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
This is the corrugated-steel-tape (CST) armoured version of the outdoor loose-tube singlemode cable, built for direct burial and for routes where rodent attack or mechanical damage is a risk. The 9/125 µm singlemode fibres (ITU-T G.652.D, category OS2) sit with excess length in gel-filled loose tubes (up to 12 fibres per tube) that are SZ-stranded around a central non-metallic strength member (FRP/GRP). Longitudinal water blocking keeps moisture out of the core. Over an inner PE sheath a corrugated steel tape is applied as armour, giving the crush and rodent protection required for direct burial, and a black UV-stabilised polyethylene (PE) outer sheath completes the double-sheath construction. It is supplied in fibre counts from 4 up to 144 fibres. For duct-only or cable-tray routing the lighter non-armoured PE version of this family is the usual choice; use this armoured type wherever the cable is buried directly in the ground.
Also known as: armoured fibre optic cable
Applications
- Heavy underground routes with a risk of damage.
- Sites with rodents or high ground pressure.
What to look out for
- Earth the corrugated steel tape at the building entry (lightning protection and equipotential bonding) and continue with a dielectric indoor cable.
- For aerial use choose ADSS (all-dielectric).
- Fibre
- Singlemode OS2 (ITU-T G.652.D), 9/125 µm.
- Buffer
- Gel-filled loose tubes stranded around a central strength member.
- Water blocking
- Longitudinal water blocking (gel or swellable elements).
- Armour
- Corrugated steel tape (CST) over an inner PE sheath, under the PE outer sheath (double sheath).
- Outer sheath
- UV- and weather-resistant polyethylene (PE), black.
- Fibre type
- OS2 singlemode, 9/125 µm, G.652.D.
- Attenuation
- Max. 0.40 dB/km at 1310 nm; max. 0.30 dB/km at 1550 nm.
- Fibre count
- Typ. 4 to 144 fibres.
- Application
- Direct burial with mechanical/rodent protection.
- Reaction to fire
- No CPR class: outdoor PE sheath. Use an LSZH cable with a CPR class indoors.
Armoured or unarmoured loose tube?
Fibre optic loose-tube OS2 armoured
- corrugated steel tape
- earth steel tape at entry
- against rodents and pressure
unarmoured
- fully metal-free
- nothing to earth
- lighter
The armoured cable has a corrugated steel tape under the outer sheath, against rodents and pressure when laid directly in the ground. You earth that steel tape at the building entry. The unarmoured version is lighter and fully metal-free, so there is nothing to earth. In a duct, unarmoured is sufficient; directly in the ground or where rodents are a risk, choose armoured.

Fibre optic loose-tube OS2 armoured
- directly in the ground
- steel tape against rodents
ADSS
- self-supporting between poles
- aramid yarns, no metal
The difference is underground versus overhead. The armoured cable is for laying directly in the ground, with a steel tape against rodents and pressure. ADSS hangs self-supporting between poles or buildings: aramid yarns take the tensile and wind load and the cable contains no metal, so ADSS can also be hung along high-voltage lines. Choose by route: in the ground, armoured; in the air, ADSS.
