Fibre optic loose-tube OS2 (outdoor)
Outdoor loose-tube singlemode OS2 (G.652.D), duct and tray
The loose-tube OS2 outdoor cable is the outdoor workhorse fibre: gel-filled loose tubes, watertight and UV-resistant, for ducts and trays over long distances. For direct burial choose the armoured version. Supplied to order; the lead time is stated in the quote.
This outdoor loose-tube cable is a singlemode optical fibre cable to ITU-T G.652.D (fibre category OS2) for duct and tray installation in the outside plant; for direct burial choose the armoured loose-tube OS2. The 9/125 µm singlemode fibres are held loosely, with excess length, inside gel-filled buffer tubes (up to 12 fibres per tube); the tubes are SZ-stranded around a central non-metallic strength member (glass-reinforced plastic, FRP/GRP) that carries the tensile load and keeps the fibres strain-free. Longitudinal water blocking (water-swellable tapes / yarns) stops moisture running along the core, and a black, UV-stabilised polyethylene (PE) outer sheath protects the cable against sunlight, abrasion and weathering. The construction is fully dielectric (no metallic elements), which simplifies earthing and handling. It is supplied in fibre counts from 4 up to 144 fibres. For duct and cable-tray routing the non-armoured version shown here is used; where the cable is buried directly in the ground or rodent attack is a risk, choose the steel-tape armoured (CST) variant of this family.
Also known as: fibre optic cable · fiber optic cable · singlemode cable
Applications
- Backbone and site links, also between buildings.
- Network connections over long distances.
What to look out for
- The PE sheath is for outdoor use; at the building entry, switch to an LSZH indoor cable.
- Choose armoured where rodents or high pressure are a concern.
- Fibre
- Singlemode OS2 (ITU-T G.652.D), 9/125 µm.
- Buffer
- Gel-filled loose tubes stranded around a central strength member.
- Water blocking
- Longitudinal water blocking (gel or swellable elements).
- Strength member
- Central GRP/FRP rod.
- Outer sheath
- UV- and weather-resistant polyethylene (PE), black.
- Fibre type
- OS2 singlemode, 9/125 µm, G.652.D.
- Attenuation
- Max. 0.40 dB/km at 1310 nm; max. 0.30 dB/km at 1550 nm.
- Fibre count
- Typ. 4 to 144 fibres.
- Application
- Duct and tray, outdoor; direct burial with the armoured version.
- Reaction to fire
- Outdoor PE sheath; use an LSZH cable for indoor CPR routes.
Outdoor loose tube or armoured?
Fibre optic loose-tube OS2 (outdoor)
- no armour
- lighter and fully metal-free
armoured
- corrugated steel tape
- against rodents and pressure
The same OS2 fibres in gel-filled tubes, but the armoured version has a corrugated steel tape over an inner sheath, under the PE outer sheath. That armour protects against rodents, pressure and mechanical load. The unarmoured cable is lighter and fully metal-free, so there is nothing to earth at the building entry. Where rodents or high pressure are a concern, choose armoured.

Fibre optic loose-tube OS2 (outdoor)
- PE sheath
- no CPR class
- up to 144 fibres
universal
- halogen-free sheath
- class Dca
- up to 24 fibres
The outdoor cable has a PE sheath without a CPR class and comes with up to 144 fibres. The universal cable has a halogen-free sheath with class Dca and runs through to the patch cabinet without a joint, but is only available with up to 24 fibres. Choose the universal cable for a building connection with a limited number of fibres. If you need more than 24 fibres, choose the outdoor loose-tube cable, with a transition to an indoor cable at the building entry.
